See DD Preferences>Dictation>Auto Cache TextEdit
Continuously Synch = auto cache = Note pad
Thus, TextEdit allows you to type and reposition the curser at anytime in the document without requiring the use of the command "cache document" which avoid peculiar behavior. You will see that Word is also available for auto cache but I caution you on its use.

Addendum: I just tested auto cache using Word 2011 and it appeared to perform well. In general DD was fast and accurate but I managed to force it into asynchrony. It corrected with a forced cache.

Two questions:

1) How do you do this: TextEdit can also be set to continuously synchronize to avoid violation of type/speech rule.

2) What does "continuously synchronize" mean?

I am not clear about your questions but this is what I can answer:

1. Discarding your plist is standard troubleshooting procedure. not a reinstall. See Troubleshooting cheat sheet in this forum. The process merely resets your preferences which seems to be a common corruption area.

2. Pasting text into Note Pad also pastes the style from other application formats. Note pad provides no way to customize formats so that once pasted, the format is stuck. Thus, to change the format you must paste a new or corrected format from another application: ie TextEdit, Word, or prior format from note pad itself, as you have found.

3. Word is supported by DD but I have not found it reliable for avoiding type/speech asynchrony. Pages is far more reliable but not supported by DD for synch. As you gain greater skill you may be able to return to robust word processing programs. TextEdit is the best fully supported WP application at this time.

4. Reinstall would discard your profile and you would start over, however, you may be able to save your current profile and import it to your new installation. This forum has a thread of that process. At this point I am not hearing any need for reinstallation or discarding your plist as your application accomplished essentially what I recommended.

5. As a precaution, back up your profile, export all custom commands. Page 170 in UM tells you where your files are located.

Hi abledoc. I will not pour a new WORD file into Note Pad for fear that this will resurrect the problem which I have now fixed. When you state that "If my prior post did not work for you, that suggests a corruption in your application. Discard your plist and restart DD before a reinstall."

Questions:

1) Are you referring to your first suggestion that I set everything in Text Edit and then pour into a new Note Pad window? If so, I am extremely reluctant to wipe out DD and start over with a whole new reinstall. I now have fixed the margins problem and things seem to be working OK.

2) If I ever do a reinstall, what is a plist? Where would I find it? If I must reinstall the application, does this mean I lose all of the learning that has taken place to date in Voice Profile? (a lot)

Thanks.

TextEdit is fully supported by DD and many prefer it. Because TextEdit is separate application there is very little risk of loss of work. Of course, TextEdit also has more word processing features. TextEdit can also be set to continuously synchronize to avoid violation of type/speech rule.

It appears your problem started with a copy paste of Word file. Try to do the same with a properly formatted Word document.

If my prior post did not work for you, that suggests a corruption in your application. Discard your plist and restart DD before a reinstall.

Hi abledoc. I tried a variation of your suggestion, and that fixed the problem. I went back the file FIRST DICTATION and I copied all of that text and then poured it into a new NOTE PAD window. For some reason, this immediately fixed the margins problem.

I have no idea why this worked ... but it did. Thanks for your help. You gave me the right idea.

Mickey

PS: Two questions:

1) Do you know why pouring FIRST DICTATION text into Note Pad would correct the problem?

2) Do you have any suggestions on how I could actually work in MS Word instead of Note Pad? I like Note Pad because if I must do any typing, I can do so without usually messing up my DOC (I always say CACHE DOCUMENT after I type anything into NOTE PAD window. This works well. However, when I try this same approach in MS Word, invariably, DD starts acting crazy, my document formatting goes all to hell and the trouble is just not worth it.

Thank you, abledoc. I followed your instructions, but the margins remain tightly constricted in Note Pad, just as before. I don't want to, because I have been working daily with the LEARN function in DD, and so I now have quite an investment in time and effort, but maybe the only way to fix this problem is to remove DD from my computer, throw away all files, including any having to do with my voice profile, and then reload the program again, starting from scratch, all over again. Maybe this will make this annoying problem go away. I hate to take this drastic step but maybe I will be forced to because of this too-tight margins problem.

An alternative, I guess, would be to work in TEXT EDIT. But since it is not a program that Nuance/DD created, maybe it is not as good as Note Pad.

Do you have any other ideas? Thanks.

In TextEdit set the document style you like, font, alignment, color, margins, etc.
Select all and copy to Note pad.
Close or save the note pad document.

This should reset note pad to your preferred style.

The margins on my NOTE PAD windows have inexplicably become severely constricted. I don't know why, and I don't know how to fix the problem. Normally, I use Note Pad for all dictation. In the past, I have tried to use WORD for this, but the occasional text typing that I must do, to insert proper names, etc., screws up the document and makes DD act crazy, so I do not use Word for dictation anymore, at lest until today. I decided to try Word again, and had the same DD problems, so I copied what little text I had and poured it into a new Note Pad window.

This is when my margin problems started to occur. The text poured into the window as a very small font. I changed the font size to Times New Roman, 28-point, which is big enough for me to see well and work with, but then, the margins problem occurred. Now, I am stuck with NOTE PAD windows that for some reason put some sort of invisible stop in the middle of the page. Thus I end up with text like this:

I changed the font size to Times New Roman,
28-point, which is big enough for me to see
well and work with, but then, the margins
problem occurred. Now, I am stuck with
NOTE PAD windows that for some reason put
some sort of invisible stop in the middle of
the page. Thus I end up with text like this:

This is a terrible way to work. I am a professional writer who works on tight deadlines and production schedules. I cannot work with
NOTE PAD windows that are only one-half
size, like you see here.

This problem occurred once before. I emailed Nuance to see if their engineers could help me solve the problem. All they wrote back was for me to work in Word. Obviously, that is not a good solution. Plus, I was surprised that they gave up so quickly on NOTE PAD, which is a DD creation.

When I had the margins problem before, I somehow fixed it myself when I inadvertently opened a file called "First Dictation." After that, somehow magically, the margin problem corrected itself. I tried this again this time, but it didn't help and now I seem to be stuck forever with an overly tight-margined note pad that is not at all practical for me to use. Since I cannot use WORD for dictation, and since NOTE PAD no longer works right, I seem to be condemned to use TEXT EDIT window. I don't like doing so. I prefer NOTE PAD, which Nuance recommends. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get NOTE PAD to revert back to the full margins of the NOTE PAD window so that I can use this nifty little program, or am I stuck with TEXT EDIT for the rest of my DD dictation career?

Thanks, and help. Mickey
Murphy. These late few lines
show you what a goofy
problem this margins issue
is. I hate it.
