Fanman,

As much as we appreciate your opinions, it is not your place to play God. Remarks like “NoBrain” and “get off the forums” would be unacceptable behavior on any forum and most forum moderators wouldn't tolerate name-calling or personal attacks. Unfortunately, it now appears this forum is no longer moderated but if you continue to behave in an unprofessional manner, Nuance may decide that this forum simply isn't worth the headache and decommission it as they have their other forums.

We are asking you politely to cease with the personal attacks and name-calling. As we previously stated, you are free to NOT READ our posts. However, advising the forum membership against taking our advice, rather than simply disagreeing with our opinion, is way over the line. We don't know your real name or your speech recognition qualifications but perhaps you should let the forum membership draw their own conclusions.

We've been developing speech recognition applications since 1993. Besides holding a BBB A+ rating along with several Nuance certifications, we also write reviews and test microphones and digital recorders for Olympus, Philips, SpeechWare, Audio-Technica, VXI Parrott, Sennheiser, Grundig, Samson, UmeVoice, Revolabs and Andrea Electronics; many of which post our test results on their website. Our answers may not always be correct but we always make our best effort. This is a forum and end users are free to take or ignore our advice.

Fanman,

>>> By the way, have you noticed that your and Marty's posts have a consistent habit of taking the threads off topic and on to bickering / advertising? I don't consider that an aid to users.<<<

You're right and we don't like it either but at the same time, we consider it our duty to minimally challenge, what we believe to be, any misleading or fraudulent claims. We realize that we get into some mudslinging but the truth is too important to ignore. From our perspective, it would be like a New Yorker pretending they didn't see a crime happening instead of getting involved. We live in the Tennessee hills where when a car breaks down, all of the neighbors pour out with tools, sandwiches and drinks. It might appear as a bit of a spectacle but that's pretty much normal behavior in our neck of the woods.

We do not hide the fact that we do not use DragonDictate but for the most part, we don't offer DragonDictate advice. This is why the bulk of our answers appear in the microphone section of this forum. Most speech recognition microphone answers are universal among all speech recognition applications; especially for DragonDictate and NaturallySpeaking which both share the same speech engine. Our personal microphone experience dates back to 1971 and from 1980 - 1993, we owned and operated a professional music recording studio in Nashville. In 1993 we became a third-party developer for DragonSystems (previous owner) and in 1996 we went into the speech recognition business full-time so we have managed to accumulate some microphone expertise along the way.

Please keep in mind that you are only 1 voice among thousands. It took us years to learn that most forum members never post. We also get that you're probably not the only 1 who feels this way but we are not here specifically for you. We are here for the majority of the membership of which many have contacted us directly for additional microphone advice. Our website is full of testimonials from end users thanking us for our microphone recommendations including 1 DragonDictate user, who sent us an e-mail today, thanking us for our advice on the new TableMike Gold Standard SpeechWare 3-in-1 which this forum probably wouldn't know about had not been for our efforts. Some DragonDictate users have even told us that they would've given up on speech recognition had it not been for our advice.

In 1996 we decided to go full-time in the speech recognition business with a unique but controversial approach. We decided to offer speech recognition advice (microphones, soundcards and recorders) on all the major speech recognition forums. It took about 3 years but we turned that approach into a career and eventually wound up building the world's most popular speech recognition forum. We knew that we were not going to make everyone happy but considering our success, we must be doing something right. While we appreciate your recommendation and admittedly, that's not the 1st time we have heard that advice, for the sake of the majority of the forum membership, we plan on continuing our contributions. While we can appreciate that you have issues with our posts, you are always free to NOT read them.

You ask which we prefer: some bickering or no answers?

Considering that you yourself have often stated that you do not use DragonDictate on a regular basis, that a lot of what you write is garbage and that your primary interest in this forum is financial, my opinion is clear. I would greatly prefer if people like you would stay out of the forums!

You once complained that I post anonymously. Have you considered that my posts are not for the sake of personal advertising like yours, but rather for helping others and improving DragonDictate?

While we would agree that the bickering shouldn't be tolerated, if we were banned or didn't participate, a lot of answers simply wouldn't appear here. So… Which would you prefer; some bickering or no answers?

While we would also greatly appreciate more moderator participation other speech recognition forums do not permit personal attacks or feuds. While we don't disagree that this type of infighting hurts both of our companies, you might be surprised to learn that it actually does more good than harm. While you say that you will never purchase from emicrophones or KnowBrainer, many of this forums membership have purchased from us and made a point of telling us that they heard about our company here. We are also enjoying another record sales year. We are genuinely sorry about the feuding but learned a long time ago that turning the other cheek simply doesn't work but we would also greatly appreciate forum moderator input.

After searching for an answer to my problem of my Logitech USB mic not being recognized, I found this forum to be the most disappointing of any resource. The bickering and loquacious diatribes by the two most frequent posters on this forum distract from any real help, which by the way, is mostly hidden in small snippets between the argumentative posts of the two commercial posters on this forum. I'm uncertain why macspeech.com doesn't ban both posters.

As stated in the previous post, their unprofessional behavior in most forum posts has helped remember both their names, and that ensures that, if I ever do need a product from either 'company', I will never do business with either. While only speaking for myself, I'm certain mine is not original thought on how I will not ever be a customer for either, and can only imagine how much business both have lost, simply because because of their behavior being a hindrance, not a help.

And I did find my answer (but not in this forum). I simply needed to restart the program.

Thanks for the information, though there never should have been a "fray" to begin with. The bickering between you (KnowBrainer) and eMicrophones on this forum (I see it's not just in this post) is really tiresome and makes you both look like children. If you are here to help, then help. If you're not, then ask yourself why you're foisting your obvious personal conflicts on folks who just want to get help using this product. I just saw the argument about "plagiarism" of someone's audio guide, and honestly, if the two of you were students in my classroom I'd whack your heads together and let you think about your behavior while you're cleaning buses on a Saturday morning. I'm reluctant ever to do business with either of you given the unprofessional antics I've seen here, which I imagine is counterproductive for you.

>>> Since it seems the microphone I have is defective, could someone tell me how I'd go about getting a new one from Nuance?<<<

We actually submitted that answer in our 1st response to goluck, in this thread, when we recommended calling Nuance (407) 241-1822 and making it their problem. This really sounds like a defective microphone. No doubt our 1st answer was lost in the fray but the simple answer is to contact Nuance for a warrantied replacement.

However, as others have pointed out, the manufacturer OEM microphone shouldn't be considered as more than a starter microphone at best. If you want to get the most out of DragonDictate, you will want to consider purchasing something better and that is precisely why our Nuance certified speech recognition team spent over a year creating the Microphone Comparison Matrix at http://www.knowbrainer.com/core/pages/miccompare.cfm? where you can view our latest microphone test results.

One other test you can try is to pair the microphone to a Bluetooth mobile/cell phone and see if it works with a device of this nature. If the results are the same, we concur with Wisely_Foolish, the microphone is defective.

Hi Saphira,

Short and sweet answer: the plantronics mic supplied with DD is useless. I used an Andrea NC185 USB mic and it is 10 times better for DD, it also improves the accuracy.

It may sound like you have a faulty mic though

I've followed both sets of directions, but the problem is that the Plantronics headset that came with my copy of Dictate does not register my voice. Not even when I take it off and hold the mic directly in front of my mouth. It registers if I tap the mic with my finger, but that's it. Do I have a faulty mic, or is there something else I should do to try to get it to recognize that I'm speaking? It does not register my voice any better in system prefs than it does in the app. Microphone setup is impossible to execute because it can't hear me. What else can I do, or is it time to tell Nuance they sent me a useless mic?

When possible, we prefer to link directly to PDF help files and manuals rather than delaying the end-user by taking them to a product page and telling them to search for and click another link. From our point of view, this looks a little too much like advertising and although we can appreciate that this procedure can help raise a company's rank in the Google listings, we find the practice somewhat distasteful and avoid it. Just our $.02

goluck,

> I could not find it on the (rather confused)
> website of eMicrophones.

In an effort to improve the quality of message and link delivery, did you click the link referenced in the message? It is at:
http://www.emicrophones.com/c-18-microphones-for-the-mac.aspx
Right at the top of the page it says:
Click Link to read step by step directions for:
"Adding a New Microphone to Dragon Dictate on Your Mac"

I guess we could have easily posted the direct link in the message. Would that have been easier for you?

Sorry about the watermark. Because some unscrupulous resellers have been known to copy our work and claim it as their own, we have been forced to protect our user guides, manuals and knowledge base with the KnowBrainer watermark but if it becomes an issue for anyone, we have no problem e-mailing a version without the watermark and we’re easy to find; phone number and Free Live Chat listed below:

I am indebted to both Marty and Lunis for the directions to instructions on how to install a microphone. Nowhere in the Nuance DD manual is it made clear that it's not enough to plug in a mike and make the correct settings in System Preferences. Although the Input had been properly set in System Preferences, DD was looking for the mike in Line In. The mike was working perfectly in Sound>Input but I could not record the test Voice Training.

Actually I read the instructions from KnowBrainer (despite the watermark) because I could not find it on the (rather confused) website of eMicrophones. I am vastly amused at the competition to help struggling souls like me, but am grateful as it only benefits us. That's one of the great aspects of American business.

Living in Australia, I am unlikely to be a customer, so I can observe that the warnings that the microphone "in the box" is unlikely to be satisfactory can safely be ignored. Nuance dictating programs are all sold in Australia with microphones, and I have never heard of them being a cause of poor performance in the transcribing from speech to text. My 87-year old neighbour has been using DD V.2.0 for a year with almost perfect results - despite rather halting speech and a regular cough. I didn't buy DD until I had thoroughly checked out local experiences.

Notwithstanding, I repeat my thanks and appreciation for assistance which quickly pointed me to the solution of an irritating impediment to getting started with my dictation.

eMicrophones, thanks to Knowbrainer's suggestion, has updated the Word Document, "Adding a New Microphone to Dragon Dictate on Your Mac," with important information and made it a PDF file.

Knowbrainer added a background watermark with his name and logo to his PDF document. This morning a new customer said she found the watermark distracting and difficcult to read and appreciated our purely informational document. The easy to read and up to date, "Adding a New Microphone to Dragon Dictate on Your Mac," document is found in a link on our Mac microphones page at:

We believe the emicrophone’s site has actually published a Microsoft Word XP/2003 document of Jon Wahrenberger's DragonDictate Audio Setup Guide, rather than a PDF file but you will find a newer “revamped” PDF version of this Guide at http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/Microphone_Guide_for_DragonDictate.PDF . Unfortunately, we suspect that your manufacturer OEM microphone may not be quite hot enough for DragonDictate. However, note that the OEM microphone really shouldn't be considered as anything more than a backup or starter microphone at best. If your microphone is damaged or just not putting on enough wattage, you'll need to call Nuance at (407) 241-1822 for a replacement but if you want to take DragonDictate to the next level, we have put together a Microphone Comparison Matrix ~ http://www.knowbrainer.com/core/pages/miccompare.cfm? where you can view our latest microphone test results which compare pricing, accuracy, noise cancellation, features and even comfort.

goluck,

On the eMicrophones web site we have a PDF document titled, "Adding a New Microphone to Dragon Dictate on Your Mac." There are screen shots and step by step directions. See this at:
http://www.emicrophones.com/download/New%20Microphone%20to%20Dragon%20Mac.doc

Be advised, most DD users even when they get a Bluetooth microphone configured find accuracy poor.

Just installed DD V.2.0 with an immediate update to 2.5.2 on a new 27" iMac running Snow Leopard. All smooth until Voice Training could not hear the microphone - a supplied Plantronics 610. It is working perfectly with the Mac>Sys Prefs>Speech pane, so it's not the problem. Checked all the Nuance suggestions for settings etc, but still dead. Is there something I'm missing?

What setting is necessary to create an adequate sampling rate? I tried to transcribe a file and was given the message that the sampling rate was too low. Huh? How the heck can I fix that!

thanks
