I just noticed that the command files are SQLite3 databases. It looks like it may be hackable. One of these evenings I'm going to try messing with it to see what's possible.

Wolfram, the commands that are parameterized (Select the Word(s) X, where X can be a word or phrase) cannot be edited, but commands that Dictate has in the commands windows can be changed. For example, if you load your profile, go to the Tools menu and choose Commands, you can search your Global commands for Scratch That (Lösche Passage) and change the command name to "Streich das" (of course without the quotes).

Soquel Mike, I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for, but you can use the command Delete the Word(s) [first word to/through last word]. So for example, if I wanted to delete the "so for example" in this long run-on sentence, I would say "Delete the words so for example" OR "Delete the words so through example".

I have been using Dragon products for many years and in fact for several years in the late 90s, I was a certified representative of Dragon Systems before they were bought out. First, let me just say that the dictation on MacSpeech is wonderful. It scores over Dragon in With important aspect. That is that I am able to dictate directly into the recognition window to make corrections to misrecognize text of the choice lists. When Dragon NaturallySpeaking on the other hand, you are forced to spell out the words you want corrected in the spell dialog box. The difference in productivity just from being able to say "edit 1" for example, and then selecting misrecognize text and make the correction before it in my document is incredible. So as much as possible, I do my dictation using MacSpeech dictate. My difficulty with MacSpeech is that the command-and-control structure is not say what you see. With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, if you say "file", you get the file menu and then you simply say whatever you see. No need to learn complicated commands that can be mouthful. Yes, I realize that in MacSpeech recommended structure is written so as not to be confused with dictation, but I am new to the Mac and although I love it, I don't know every menu available as of yet. If you're that concerned about simply being able to say "file" and having it being confused with dictation, I would point out that that's why there's a separate command mode available for those who need it.

I too use use DNS and MSD. It's driving me batty. The command I miss most from MSD is "delete last X. words". A incredibly useful command, I really miss it in MSD.

Re item 2) I would like to make a clarification: I was aware what the command for selecting text is in MSD.

The issue I have pointed out was that the command is *different* from the command on DNS, meaning that I need to learn different commands even for basic editing. For more advanced commands it might certainly make sense to have different wordings (if the commands indeed accomplish slightly different things on the two systems), but basic editing is so simple that it is really hard to adapt to different ways of expressing one and the same thing.

Furthermore, the German commands deviate even stronger from the English ones. E.g., the command "Scratch that" (which is the same on DNS and MSD) is "Streich das" in the German DNS, but "Lösche Passage" in German MSD. *Yuck*

1.) DNS offers a tool called ''Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer'' which takes about half an hour (on my machine) to analyze and optimize my profile. I run it manually on a regular basis. Is there a similar feature on MSD?

With MacSpeech Dictate, the best thing to do is use Voice Training, Vocabulary Training, and Phrase Training through the Recognition window, so that MacSpeech Dictate continuously updates your Profile to improve accuracy. I don't think there is any other sort of file management or clean up that you need to do with MacSpeech Dictate...on the Mac.

a) Using MSD how can I write AppleScript macros with variables? E.g. "Generate email to <name>", which is a predefined command.

Check out the menu item "Preferences > Command > Generate Email Commands". This box is unchecked as a default. However, I would leave it unchecked if you have a large number of email addresses in your Address Book.

Variables are not supported in MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.

c) Can I change the navigation commands (e.g. "select <text>")?

The command in MacSpeech Dictate is "Select The Word(s) XX". "XX" can be a word, a whole bunch of words spoken, or "<beginning word> through <end word".

3.) I have read that there is no voice recorder transcription for MSD. I would like to join the other users who already pointed out that they would like to have such a feature. This is a crucially important feature for many users in Germany, including almost every single physician (!) and many lawyers.

Thanks -- that request is definitely noted. I don't have an announcement about when such a product might be available, but we certainly agree this is an important solution that is much requested by Mac users.

I am using both MacSpeech Dictate 10.5 (MSD) on MacOS and Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.1 (DNS) on Windows. In both cases I use the German version (so I may accidentally mislabel the names of features in the English version, I apologize for that). I have a few questions on features that may either be different among those two programs or that I don't understand properly:

1.) DNS offers a tool called ''Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer'' which takes about half an hour (on my machine) to analyze and optimize my profile. I run it manually on a regular basis. Is there a similar feature on MSD?

2.) Several frequently used commands are different on both platforms which is very confusing for me. In some cases I can simply write macros to compensate, but there are some macros that I don't know how to duplicate. (Again, my comment applies to the German versions!) The following things would be helpful:
a) Using MSD how can I write AppleScript macros with variables? E.g. "Generate email to <name>", which is a predefined command.
b) For some reason I couldn't find the command mentioned above in the total list of commands. So I don't know how to figure this out myself.
c) Can I change the navigation commands (e.g. "select <text>")?

3.) I have read that there is no voice recorder transcription for MSD. I would like to join the other users who already pointed out that they would like to have such a feature. This is a crucially important feature for many users in Germany, including almost every single physician (!) and many lawyers.
