I have recently read the following article from MacWorld and I've been trying to get a hold of one of the SpeechWare 3-in-1 microphones. Does anyone know of a supplier in the UK that has them available?

    Drjj,

The go to person for microphones in the UK is Graham Hendry. He may not carry the 3 in 1 but carries the less expensive Buddy Desktop that performs equally well and is a trouble free performer not requiring constant updates. Although you are likely to hear different from the aforementioned, there is no difference in accuracy or noise canceling.

See Graham's ITSpeaking web site to see and contact Graham.

Well I'm very surprised to read what you are saying. I work in a busy general hospital, I have used the Buddy Gooseneck for 18 months or so with Dragon Medical 10.1. One of the surgeons recently purchased a SpeechWare 3-in-1 and when he was on vacation last week he let me try it in my particular office which has a fair bet of background noise at times. The SpeechWare 3-in-1 had two very significant advantages:

    1. I could dictate with it from something like 18 inches, with the Buddy if I went further than 6 inches away I had severe accuracy problems.

    2. However most significant thing was the noise cancellation. With the Buddy Gooseneck I have continuing problems with the dragon teardrop going round and round and round when it picks up background noise, considerably slowing down my dictation particularly when filling in forms. With the SpeechWare 3-in-1 this noise problem was completely eradicated.

incidentally my colleague purchased direct from Belgium on a personal basis but the hospital purchasing department are unable to do this

Drjj, your findings are right on the money.

We are 1 of several SpeechWare third-party developers and beta testers for the 3-in-1. We also introduced the 3-in-1 to the speech recognition community and Mac forum several months ago in the microphone section of this forum. After completing our beta testing, we wrote the Battle of the TableMikes Review where you will see the 3-in-1 quite literally tromps the Buddy Desktop in a number of categories including range, noise cancellation, multi-microphone settings, specialized NaturallySpeaking 11 algorithms, built-in specialized noise filtering USB soundcard, auto level control for long-distance dictation, three-way switch (including auto on you power up your computer), foot pedal control option (exclusive to the 6-in-1 and 9-in-1), microphone input jack for external microphone and even an option to remove the microphone from the base station for easy transport. Although the Buddy Desktop DSP is an excellent microphone (which we also carry), it doesn't include any of these features.

Considering the emicrophones isn't permitted to carry SpeechWare microphones, wasn't part of the development team and to our knowledge, has never even touched a 3-in-1 microphone, we would have to recommend taking his “expertise” with a grain of salt.

Note that the 3-in-1 is currently out of stock everywhere because there is a huge demand for this item which item sells out quickly but SpeechWare resellers and distributors should be restocked by the end of this month. Besides Graham Henry, who may or may not stock the 3-in-1, you might consider contacting Lindsay Adam at ladam@btconnect.com in the UK because he was also one the developers and you'll find his name, along with the other developers, mentioned in the credits that are included with the SpeechWare 3-in-1 which is also our microphone choice. Also note that the new SpeechWare 6-in-1 TableMike will debut at the end of this month.

    Drjj,

Is your Buddy Desktop the new 7G DSP (digital signal processor) model?

Too late Marty. Drjj has already purchased the superior 3-in-1 microphone from Lindsay who is a Nuance-certified UK SpeechWare reseller.

    Thanks for all your help.

I wouldn't like to say which microphone is the best but for the particular circumstance of our office (background noise) and wishing to be able to dictate from 18 inches away then the SpeechWare gives us better results, I am sure it is different in different circumstances.

incidentally the microphones were available here and in stock with the first:

Our apologies. We've been sold out for over a month and assumed that everybody else would be out of stock. We are glad you were able to source this item as we know Lindsay is down to his last 1. If you need additional units, UK resellers should be well stocked in another week or 2.
