I am really concerned about this issue, and if/when it will be fixed. Will Dictate 1.5 fix it? I have been afraid to update my OS since seeing this post. Any advice appreciated!

I'm having the same problem. I've tried deinstalling and reinstalling, reinstalling and setting up my Mic and have tried creating new profiles. No text can be generated and no commands are actually executed. The program looks like it's working and everything tests out, but since the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.7 from 10.5.6, it doesn't work.

Well, that's enough proof for me that I can't install this update if I want to allow my RSIs to heal. I am not sure when I'll be able to afford the upgrade (and am still not happy about that whole arrangement), but it seems to me there should, at the very least, be a patch for 1.3 to run properly on 10.5.7.

Try resetting your sound input in System Preferences. Here is a Knowledge Base article describing this: "I'm having problems with dictation input after updating to a new version of Mac OS X".

If you are experiencing crashing, please see this article: "What do I do if MacSpeech Dictate 1.5 crashes, or I experience an error?".

If there's no resolution to crashing, you may want to contact MacSpeech Technical Support.

I hope someone will post if this works. I'd like to update my OS if it does, but I won't if the problem still exists.

I did the Apple updates 10.5 .7 and MacSpeech Dictate 1.3 came out unscathed. I will post again if anything changes.

I upgraded to 10.5 .7 and have had MacSpeech 1.3 running for a couple of days with no problems. No crashes or problem to report at this time.. fingers crossed.

In case this might help anyone... I am pasting something that is working for some people.

"MacSpeech Dictate has not crashed, nor have I had to reinstall it, since I changed my Input Source Name to US from Canadian English. "

There is not enough information here (such the version of Dictate and Mac OS X) to tell what's wrong. If you are having a problem with the Input Source Name set to "Canadian English", please contact MacSpeech Technical Support.

I purchased MSD yesterday (1.3), installed and profiled over 10.5.7. All going fine until this morning when it decided to hang when I attempted to dictate into Notepad. I've forwarded the txt files and message to technical support but want to add my name to the growing list of people having this problem,.

I too am experiencing this problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just hangs up, registering input on the meter, but nothing is happening. Other things are going wrong as well like text jumping around and being inputted in different places, particularly with Open Office, and Microsoft Office Word 2008.

Yesterday I installed and used 1.5.1 on 10.5.7. Everything went smooth and I was able to dictate; program was faster, made less errors, and few old irritants were gone. Used Train Vocabulary from Selection easily. Used old profile from 1.3 (transferred easily by application to 1.5.1). GREAT!! I couldn't be more pleased with the upgrade.

Today, all hell broke loose! Program is unusable!!! Freezes (require Force Quit) everytime I try to use Train Vocabulary from Selection -- hard freeze. Also now dictation inserts in middle of words. Choose 2 and the recognition window closes. On opening application, I get the startup windows that I went through for the successful initial install.

    Now application is completely unusable!

pwwwayne, This is exactly what is happening to me. Sometimes it works, then something starts to happen, text jumps around all over the place, it will freeze, or the meter shows audio being received but no translation occurring and then the software crashes. I am getting to the stage where I'm going to uninstall it and go back to what I had. It worked! Come on technical team, fix this problem!!!

I just installed 1.5.1 and updated to 10.5.7, and so far everything seems to be okay. Here's hoping!

I posted an hour ago that the program had become unusable after a day of very suitable upgrade performance.

Well, now every thing has gone back from "unusable" to "very suitable upgrade performance".

The dictation Gods are playing inexplicable tricks !!!

    Add another to the list.

Hadn't used Dictate in months. Returned to it last week, it prompted for upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3. Created a new profile with a new headset (Plantronics Audio 470 USB) just fine. Launched MS Word App just fine. Dictated 3 test sentences into Dictate Notepad just fine. Then, freeze. Force quit, restarted machine, relaunched Dictate and same behavior. Later, rinse, repeat. Freeze, freeze, freeze. Mic input level response to voice input. But nothing in Notepad, then the spinning beach ball. Once, an error message came up and set up an auto-generated e-mail to MacSpeech, and I found a boatload of documents in a folder entitled Troubleshooting (inside the Application Support => MacSpeech folder). It appears as though MacSpeech has some sort of bug that gobbles through memory, then chokes, ending with an "OUT OF MEMORY" error.

Returned to original headset (Plantronics DSP USB), re-launched, profile recognized, same symptoms, same results. Obviously not a headphone issue.

This is on a late-2008 iMac 24 2.4 Ghz with 4 GB of RAM and plenty of disk space, and I've replicated the MacSpeech freeze with no other apps running.

So obviously MacSpeech has got bugs, no surprise to anyone here.

I am dismayed to have read through these boards and finding people saying tech support is unresponsive, and worse, that MacSpeech does not, and has not been willing or able to get bug fixes out in a timely manner, if at all. Worse, it seems they've tried to shake down the installed base with upgrade fees before fixing the bugs.

I will report back with what I learn. As of this point, MacDictate is completely non-functional for me - a 100% defective product. I am happy to support Mac developers who conduct business in a reputable manner, and treat their customers with respect, and happy to be patient when I know they're working on fixing product defects BEFORE worrying about trying to create the next marketing push. I'm equally happy to make sure Mac users know when companies choose a different course.

Bottom line, had I read what I've read in these forums a year ago before purchasing MacDictate, I'd have never bought the product to begin with. If MacSpeech cannot return the product to the full functionality upon which it was marketed, I'll be asking for a full refund.

Yes, for me as a brand-new user of this (10 days) I'm very positive and functionally works well however I get quite a lot of spinning beach ball kind of behaviour on this 2.93 MHz Nehalem 16 core Mac pro with only one core ever utilised. I posted elsewhere on this and just wonder myself what is going on when it seems to struggle with a very simple word with the spinning beach ball and of course the obligatory spin dump sub task and of course a bunch of entries in the troubleshooting directory inside the Mac speech application support directory.

I'm wondering whether I should completely rip Mac speech out including all the profile files, receipts, preferences etc as has been discussed and reinstall Mac speech that the hope that it will work a bit faster.

I believe from the documentation supplied, that it is recommended by the vendor that one should use the import through the Dictate application itself rather than perhaps using it through say an application like pages, Keynote, is Safari, etc etc. In fact I don't see any difference at all on this machine.

On wondering also whether the supplied headset that came with this software which seems a bit cheesy in fact maybe part to blame for maybe lousy audio. maybe there is some ambient noise around that doesn't like too much. I intend of course to use my Sennheiser ME66 all my Shure SM 58 through a USB adapter and I can get hold of one.

In any case I just wish you would be a bit more responsive so I don't have that kind of talk in a choppy manner that seems to buffer up quite a lot of stuff after you start talking.

I'll be watching these boards to see what else happens with this. I can't bitch about the upgrade price as I just bought a brand-new however it seems to be functionally okay it's just that I bought this on a recommendation from the pod cast by Charlie White who said this was very cool and as I had to write a lot of white papers this seems to be the way to go.

I also found this is extremely useful in logging footage in Final Cut Pro will stop I have to say this alone makes it possibly worth the purchase. :-)

I just upgraded a MacPro from OS 10.5.4 to 10.5.7 in order to move from Dictate 1.3 to 1.5.1.

The upgrade of the OS completely munged audio input through USB. You can hear the result by pressing Play in the recognition window in Dictate (both versions). There is lots of crackling and static; but what is worse is that there is a reverb effect with everything I say coming out with an echo to it.

Unsurprisingly, Dictate makes major errors in trying to interpret what I say.

Wiping the hard drive and installing OS 10.5.6 instead seems to have cured the problem. I think that this is an Apple created problem rather than a MacSpeech one.
